An Informative Greek Costume Chronicle

Greece today is a moderately small country in the eastern part of Europe. At one time Greece was “the” place to be. It was a prosperous country of great thinkers and put Greece in the lead as the sage of the civilized world. Protocol and costume helped create a Greek society that gave sustained structure to the world we live in today. The archaeological discoveries from old ruins have formed a fantastic source of Greek era data most notably of their garments.

Timely evidence has facilitated us to have a genuinely clear idea of Ancient Greek dress. The mode of ancient Greek costume has been meticulously illustrated on pots, vases and statues. A frequent resemblance of their style of clothing are the uncomplicated basic shape which relied on girdles, belts and brooches and clasp or pins to help create a silhouette and form around the body. Greek costume was highly artistic and required meticulous creativity in order to drape and pull the fabric in the right places. Borders around the fabrics designed descended into interesting patterns arranged in a form of dress (or costume) called a “chiton robe”. Checks and floral designs were embroidered around the edges of the fabric to produce a symbolic effect that is recognized as “Greek originality” still today.

The tunic or -Greek chiton- was worn by both men and women. Women’s chitons were floor length while men wore their chitons to the knee in most instances, though at times they wore them long. Greek society was complex but seemingly equal, at least in their dress. Only slight differences distinguished the sexes. For instance men routinely pinned their chiton on the left shoulder while the women pinned their chiton on both shoulders. Women also wore various colors such as red, purple, blue, yellow or green. It was originally comprehended that the only colors worn by both sexes were white or natural. Some materials were also patterned made from Linen or Silk. Greeks also accessorized their clothing. The most famous is the Laurel Leaf Head Wreath mostly worn by men. Women wore gold or silver hair pins, cone headdresses or tiaras. Crimping, plaiting and waving of the females hair decorated with a band around the head was also in vogue during this era.

Today you can find an array of Greek costumes, especially during Halloween. There’s no lacking in imagination for the styles on offer. For instance Pleated Greek Goddess Costumes, Greek Emperor Costumes, Greek Goddess Venus Costumes, Greek Warrior Costumes, Greek Empress Costumes and numerous other Greek costume fashions are the terms used of the more popular styles. Subject to the reason for purchasing your Greek costume, prices are reasonable. For a one-off fun “just for the party” Greek costume you’ll get your monies worth for the sum of about $20.00. For those with more delicate taste or if detail is an important consideration you can expect to pay in the range of $90.00 and up.
